What it Takes to Become an ASE Certified Technician
The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence, referred to as ASE for short, was established in 1972 to improve the overall quality of repairs done on vehicles by testing and setting a standard for vehicle technicians.
There are nearly 300,000 automotive technicians/service professionals that have received ASE certification. If you’re interested in becoming a ASE certified technician, here are a few things to keep in mind:
- In conjunction with passing the ASE certification test, you must also have two years of job training or one year of job training with a two-year degree in automotive repair.
- The test is created by a panel of seasoned automotive industry professionals and executives, including working technicians, automobile manufacturers, aftermarket manufacturers, and educators across the nation. No one from ASE creates test questions.
- There are tests created and divided by sub segments that could include collision repair, truck equipment, general automobile, and more. There are over 40 different exams that are intended to test the depth and scope of a training technician’s skillset.
- Keep in mind that only two out of three test takers pass the test their first time. Make sure to be well prepared before taking the test.
- To remain certified, you must retake the test every five years to stay up to date on new automotive changes in the industry.
Auto shops with an ASE technician, or more than one, are typically regarded highly by local customers. Repair shops can also get additional visibility in their markets when they qualify for the Blue Seal of Excellence Recognition Program.
