How Do I Dispose of My Old Tires?
Got a new set of tires or a tire? Unsure of what to do with it now? Lucky for you, there are a few ways to properly dispose of tires.
We do not recommend leaving old tires on the side of the road if possible. Please do not take to a landfill or leave in your garbage can either.
Tire Shops
Before completely disposing of your tires, do see if your local auto shop is able to repair or retread them. However, if this is impossible, purchase new tires and get them aligned by a trusted auto shop. They should be able to dispose of the old tires for you by sending them to a recycling facility. The cost of your tires may also include a recycling fee – ask your dealer about disposal before buying to find out.
Recycle Them Yourself
If you’re familiar with the recycling process of tires, feel free to do this project yourself. The rim of the wheel is often made from an alloy, a mixture combining two or more metallic elements, of aluminum or magnesium. This can be recycled as scrap metal. Wheel weights can be used for scrap metal too. This process is not easy so exercise caution if this is the route you would like to go.
However, if you find yourself with the responsibility of disposing of old tires on a family or friend’s property, you may find it worth your while to pay the recycling fee to the recycling facility. It’s entirely up to you.
Repurpose
Old tires can always be reused as well. The obvious option would be to hang a tire swing in one of the trees on your property. However, you can also create virtually any type of decoration piece you put your mind to. Some people create planters, sink basins, chairs, gardening “boxes”, and even tables. The options go as far as you’re willing to go.
